This article explains how Address Validation for Dataverse decides what to save after a Melissa Personator or Melissa Global check, and how to change it with the Melissa Blocking Result Codes setting.
Why some results are not saved
Melissa returns a list of result codes with every check, for example AS01 (address fully verified) or AE02 (unknown street). Some codes mean the address could not be verified. Saving that data would overwrite a correct address with an unverified one, so the product checks the codes against a list on the Field Mapping before writing anything.
The Melissa Blocking Result Codes setting
Open the Field Mapping. On the Melissa Personator tab (General Configuration) or the Melissa Global tab (Global Service), fill in Melissa Blocking Result Codes:
- Separate codes with commas, for example
AE01,AE02,AE03. - End an entry with
*to match every code that starts with it, for exampleAE*orAV1*. - When one of the returned codes is in the list, the address, enrichment and additional-mapping columns are not updated. The codes are still written to the Validation Details field.
When the field is empty, the default for the service applies:
| Service | Default when empty |
|---|---|
| Melissa Personator | AE*,PE*,EE*,NE*,SP01: any address, phone, email or name error blocks the update. |
| Melissa Global Address | AE*,GE*: any address or geocode error blocks the address update. |
| Melissa Global Email, Phone, Name | Nothing is blocked. |
New Field Mappings are pre-filled with a recommended list. For Personator it blocks addresses Melissa could not find but keeps building-level data when only the suite is wrong:
AE01,AE02,AE03,AE04,AE05,AE06,AE07,AE10,AE11,AE12,AE13,AE14,AE21,PE*,EE*,NE*,SP01
Example: the suite is not recognized
For 9645 Gerwig Ln Ste 200, Columbia, MD 21046, Melissa finds the building but not suite 200 and returns AE08,AS02,AS17,VS00, along with the county (Howard), ZIP+4 (21046-2581) and coordinates.
- With the default list,
AE08matchesAE*: only the Validation Details field is updated, and the user sees Not verified. - With the recommended list,
AE08is not listed: the county, ZIP+4, coordinates and address are saved,AE08stays in the Validation Details field, and the user sees a Partially verified warning.
What users see
| Result | On the form | Validation Status output |
|---|---|---|
| No error code | The form refreshes with the verified data. | VERIFIED |
| Error code not in the list | Data is saved and a warning lists the codes and their meaning. | PARTIAL |
| Code in the list | Only Validation Details is updated; an error message explains why. | NOT_VERIFIED |
| No street address and no postal code (Personator), or a required input is empty (Global) | Melissa is not called, no credit is used, and a message says there is nothing to validate. | SKIPPED |
For Melissa Global, each service (Address, Email, Phone, Name) is evaluated on its own, so a blocked address does not stop a verified email from being saved. The Validation Status output is reported per service, for example Address:NOT_VERIFIED|Email:VERIFIED.
