Validate Addresses with Smarty in Dataverse Workflows

Smarty - Configuration

Address Validation for Dataverse includes two classic workflow steps that verify addresses with Smarty. Use them to verify addresses in the background, for example when a record is created or updated by an integration or a portal. To use Smarty from Power Automate instead, see Validate Addresses with Power Automate: Smarty (Unbound Action).

Workflow stepSmarty productUse for
Verify with SmartyUS Address VerificationAddresses in the United States, including Puerto Rico and the other US territories
Verify with Smarty InternationalInternational Address VerificationAddresses in every other country

Smarty sells these as two separate products, with their own results and subscriptions, so they are two steps. Use a condition on the country to send each address to the right step.

Before you start

  • An Address Validation license that includes the Smarty add-on.
  • A Smarty subscription for US Address Verification, International Address Verification, or both.
  • An API Configuration record with Validation Service Type Smarty Api that holds your Smarty secret key, entered as your Auth ID, a colon, then your Auth Token. The steps run on the server, where an embedded key does not work. See Set up your Smarty API Keys.

Create the workflow

  1. In the Power Apps Maker Portal, open the solution where you want to include the workflow.
  2. Select New > Automation > Process > Workflow. Enter a name, select the table where the address columns are located (for example, Contact) and select Create.
  3. Add a Check Condition that tests whether the country is the United States (for example, Address 1: Country/Region equals US, USA or United States). Decide how to treat records with no country: the US step works without a country, while the international step needs one.
  4. In the condition's branch for the United States, select Add Step > Address Validation > Verify with Smarty. In the Otherwise branch, add Verify with Smarty International.
  5. Select Set Properties on each step and fill in the inputs below.
  6. Add the steps that use the result, for example an Update Record step that writes the verified address when it is deliverable (see Decide whether to update the record).
  7. Save and activate the workflow.

Inputs

InputRequiredWhat to enter
API ConfigurationYesThe API Configuration record that holds the Smarty secret key (for example, Smarty Verify).
Input Street AddressYesHouse number and street.
Input Unit NumberRecommendedApartment, suite or unit. Buildings with several units are only deliverable when the unit is supplied.
Input CityRecommendedCity. For US addresses, supply at least the city and state, or the ZIP code.
Input State/ProvinceRecommendedState, province or region.
Input Zip/Postal CodeOptionalZIP or postal code.
Input CountyOptionalCounty.
Input CountryRequired for internationalCountry name or ISO code (for example US, CA, GB). The US step accepts it empty; if you supply a country other than the United States, it stops and tells you to use the international step.
Include Geocoding (requires Smarty international geocoding)Optional (international step only)No by default. Yes returns latitude and longitude when your Smarty subscription includes international geocoding. If it does not, the address is still verified and Verification Details explains why there are no coordinates. The US step has no such input: US verification always returns coordinates.

Outputs

OutputDescription
Result FoundSuccess whenever Smarty returned a usable standardized address, including addresses that are correct but not yet deliverable (for example, missing an apartment number). Failed when nothing usable came back.
Verification StatusThe exact verdict: Verified, Corrected, MissingSecondary, Unverified, Insufficient or Unknown.
Missing ComponentsWhat is missing, for example Secondary number (apartment, suite, etc.).
Verification DetailsA readable explanation, including Smarty's corrections, postal service notes, vacancy and any notes about coordinates.
Confidence LevelVERY HIGH, HIGH, MEDIUM or LOW.
Street Address, Unit Number, City, State/Province, Zip/Postal Code, CountyThe standardized address components. The street and the unit are always returned separately.
Extended Zip/Postal CodeThe ZIP+4 extension for US addresses (Verify with Smarty only).
CountryThe two-letter ISO country code (for example US), not the country name.
Full AddressThe complete formatted address on one line.
Latitude, LongitudeAlways for US addresses that Smarty could place. For international addresses, only when Include Geocoding is Yes and your subscription includes international geocoding. Otherwise 0.
Entity TypeRESIDENTIAL or BUSINESS for US addresses, when Smarty reports it.
Verification StatusResult FoundConfidenceMeaning
VerifiedSuccessVERY HIGHDeliverable as supplied. Internationally, this also covers a match to the most precise level Smarty's data offers for that country.
CorrectedSuccessHIGHDeliverable after Smarty corrected it, for example the ZIP code or a spelling. Abbreviations such as Street to St are not counted as corrections.
MissingSecondarySuccessHIGH or MEDIUMThe address is right but needs an apartment or suite, or the unit supplied is not recognized. Internationally, the street was confirmed but not the building number.
UnverifiedFailedLOWCould not be matched, matched several addresses, or matched only to the city.
InsufficientFailedLOWNot enough input to identify an address.

Example. Verifying 780 Greenwich St, New York, NY with Verify with Smarty returns Result Found = Success, Verification Status = MissingSecondary, Missing Components = Secondary number (apartment, suite, etc.), ZIP code 10014 with extension 5919, County = New York, Entity Type = RESIDENTIAL, and coordinates.

Decide whether to update the record

The Smarty steps do not update any record; your workflow decides what to do with the result. A safe rule is to overwrite the address only when Verification Status is Verified or Corrected. A MissingSecondary result is a good trigger to ask for the missing unit, because the rest of the address is already correct. The country is returned as an ISO code (for example US); if you prefer to keep the country name, leave the country column out of the update.

Costs and limits

  • Each verification uses one Smarty lookup, from the US or the international subscription.
  • The steps check the input before calling Smarty. A US step given a non-US country, or an address without enough information, stops without using a lookup.
  • Smarty refuses the same address sent many times in a short period. Avoid workflows that re-verify the same record repeatedly, for example on every update of an unrelated column.

Troubleshooting

SymptomWhat to check
There is a problem with the product licence. Please contact the administrator. The Address Validation license has expired.
The API configuration holds a Smarty embedded (website) keySelect the record that holds the secret key (Auth ID and Auth Token).
The API Key starts with the word "AuthID", or the part after the colon looks like an Auth IDRe-enter the API Key as your real Auth ID, a colon, then your real Auth Token.
Smarty rejected the credentials (HTTP 401)The Auth ID and Auth Token do not match an active secret key in your Smarty account.
No active subscription, or lookups used up (HTTP 402)Your Smarty account has no subscription for that product (US or international), or its lookups are used up.
Smarty throttled the request (HTTP 429)Too many requests, or the same address sent repeatedly. Wait and retry, and check the workflow is not looping.
The Smarty US API only verifies United States addressesThe country is not the United States. Check the country condition and use Verify with Smarty International.
The step needs an API configuration whose Validation Service Type is "Smarty Api"The selected API Configuration record is for another provider.
No coordinates for an international addressInclude Geocoding is No, or your Smarty subscription does not include international geocoding. Verification Details says which.
